Integrating Outlook Contacts and Tasks with SharePoint:

Outlook 2003 has a one way synchronisation with SharePoint.
You can do a once only upload of your Contacts or Tasks to a specific list, but after that, you can only edit these via Internet Explorer and not via Outlook.

Outlook synchronisation with SharePoint only applies to the default set of columns in a newly created ‘Contacts List’. For example, the field ‘Children’ is not included as a default column in a SharePoint ‘Contacts List’ but it exists by default in Outlook. However, if you were to add this column to a SharePoint ‘Contacts List’ and click on ‘Link to Outlook’, any data in this column is NOT imported into Outlook.

As a workaround to this, the SharePoint ‘Contacts List’ can be exported to an Excel spreadsheet, saved as a .csv and then imported into Outlook. To use the example from above, using the ‘Children’ field in SharePoint would correctly import into Outlook via this method.

Without the use of VBA code, it is not possible to import user-defined contact fields in Outlook and have Outlook create these fields on the fly. At best, you can only map user-defined contact fields to existing default Outlook contact fields. Again, you can only do this via a contact list import from excel or a .csv etc.

A simpler and more practical way to have a list of Contacts or Tasks in SharePoint is to use the Excel 2003 Integration with SharePoint. This is able to synchronise both ways and allows you to update entries in Excel, rather than having to click around in Internet Explorer to get to a SharePoint List.

Integrating Outlook Messages with SharePoint:

Saving messages into Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Portal Server can be done from the save as menu item in Outlook 2003. This allows you to save messages in Document Library. The saving method is fine if there is only one document library you want to save this to. The way to find this isn’t very intuitive. You have to type the URL of the site and then browse to the document library.
There are a few other items to consider if you want to share your messages this way.

The searching in SharePoint is only enabled to search a few types of files.
These are:

• Text, Html , Archived HTML, ASPX and XML Files
• Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and Publisher Files
• PDF Files will need the iFilter from Adobe.

** Microsoft Outlook produces .msg Files which contain the attachment as well as the body of the message. To search a .msg file, one needs an iFilter for the SQL Server Full Text Search Engine.
Also, the search only applies to documents added or changed after the iFilter
is applied. The search also looks in the metadata including the values in document
library columns. If you type in ‘Automating Legal Systems’, you’ll return all documents with
the word “Automating’ in them, plus any with the word “Legal” etc.
SharePoint Portal Server provides more detailed indexing of content so you can use document properties or column names in your search criteria, allowing more targeting searching.

Malcolm Gladwell’s book “Blink” is a fascinating read. The subtitle “The Power of Thinking Without Thinking” gives some clue to its thesis. It’s a book that Gladwell describes as being about ‘the thoughts and decisions that bubble up from our unconscious.’

What we might term intuition, Gladwell refers to as ‘thin-slicing’. “Thin-slicing”, he writes, “refers to the ability of our unconscious to find patterns in situations and behaviour based on very narrow slices of experience.”

He goes on to cite psychologist John Gottman who can predict whether couples will still be married, 15 years down the line, with 90% accuracy, after 15 minutes’ observation.

Gladwell says: “Thin-slicing is part of what makes the unconscious so dazzling. But it’s also what we find most problematic about rapid cognition. How is it possible to gather the necessary information for a sophisticated judgement in such a short time? The answer is that when our unconscious engages in thin-slicing, what we are doing is an automated, accelerated unconscious version of what Gottman does.’

Our unconscious is generally right. Of course, many of us are reluctant to trust the accuracy of that thin slice. (Many women get a negative ‘thin-slice’ message first off from partners who prove to be abusive but, for whatever reason, they override it.)

They then move into ‘thick-slice’ technology. Their partner repeatedly behaves deplorably towards them, and quite possibly towards their parents, friends and children also. But still they focus on what’s good about their partner, and salvageable about the relationship.

How thick does the slice have to be before finally they get it?

If you’ve been an unwitting ‘thick-slicer’ - and I certainly was - you now have acquired a valuable tool for your armoury.

How thick do you need the slice to be? More, doesn’t mean different, it just means more.

Change is something that you can only effect for yourself, within yourself. As regards relationships, the formidable John Gottman is quite clear. He says:

“People are in one of two states in a relationship… The first is what I call positive sentiment override, where positive emotion overrides irritability…Or they can be in negative sentiment override, so that even a relatively neutral thing that a partner says gets perceived as negative. In the negative sentiment override state, people draw lasting conclusions about each other. [My italics]

“Once they start going down, towards negative emotion, ninety-four percent will continue going down. They start on a bad course and they can’t correct it.”

Knowing what you know now, are you a thick-slice or a thin-slice person?

Notebooks seem to be the current in thing this year. Taiwanese manufacturers have said raw material scarcities will affect fullfilment this year due to the big demands. I think the worst thing for manufacturers is that it doesn’t look like anything will diminish this demand for laptops. The incredible thing is that even when you get the latest thing out it’ll quickly be out of date.

With all the latest progress in technology gaming notebooks have benefitted a great extent in my opinion. I feel gaming notebooks have never been cheaper. You can hunt down some really good offers out there that will get you playing games. Laptop computers can now genuinly be used for gaming by gamers due to the increased performance of new portables. Smaller components that perform faster and are run cooler also means that gone are the era’s of the massive notebooks for gaming. Sure one is not refuting that there is a performance gap between laptops and desktop pcs in relation to gaming performance but this should always exist. I feel gaming notebooks are always exciting to read about because they are always pushing the limits on portable technology.

Now and then the standard mass market notebooks just are not adequate for what we require them for so custom laptops will always be about. The idea of getting after market components entices some people in my view. It just allows the end user added options at the end of the day. Mass market notebooks are not manufactured with specialist consumers in mind and this could mean a predicament. Custom notebooks allow a work around to this. There is a large array of choices for custom built notebooks with system builders all offering unparalleled personal service. Yet a further great point.

We’re witnessing some pretty awesome things at the minute and I’m curious what will hit the market next. Small internet notebooks are the latest development to get mass market appeal. Its crazy how 1 successful notebook has created a new sector. Consumers would like to have big screen ultra portables if that sounds correct. I guess you could say these notebooks are already attainable if you’re willing to pay the cash. It would hardly shock me to see ultra mobile gaming notebooks in the next forthcoming future. New notebooks are seen every year and I’m sure the next couple of months already holds a lot of promise for us techies.

Your best defense against getting involved in illegal schemes and the “LOSERS” calling themselves Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Programs, is knowing what to look for, thereby, knowing what to avoid.

After over three years experience and research with MLM, we have come up with some “guidelines” which we use to avoid the “Rip-Offs”, Schemes, and “Losers”. These important “guidelines” enhance the chances of picking the “BIG WINNERS’ in MLM. You too, may now use this as a “check list before making any final decision:

1. Avoid the many “Get Rich Quick” offers like “Earn $100,000 Over The Week-End”, or something like that. Legitimate Multi-Level businesses and consultants are at the heart of a vast communications network and have never… repeat NEVER heard of anybody earning vast amounts of money with such offers.

2. Marketing products through the MLM concept is one thing, a “chain letter” is another. Even if the chain-letter has a product such as a Report, it is still considered a chain-letter by Postal Authorities and may get you the wrong kind of attention. Some even say “this one is LEGAL… Refer to Postal Statute No.XXXX”. DON’T BUY IT! A “chain-letter” is a Chain- Letter PERIOD. If you must send the name or names on the 1etter a sum of money and add your name, expecting others to send you money, you will be involved in a “Chain-Letter”.

3. Avoid Pyramid Schemes. These schemes are a problem to MLM because many people do not know the difference between a pyramid plan and a merchandise based marketing plan. You can spot a pyramid plan by:

A. They offer rewards for the act of recruiting.

B. Large inventory purchases are required to get in their programs.

C. They lack interest in retailing to the consumer and they make deceptive claims designed to defraud people of money. Legitimate MLM companies require new distributors to purchase only one or a few items of what they want and the product is probably one they would buy even if the business opportunity was not offered or available.

4. Avoid programs offering to print and mail brochures for you. Because there 1s NO WAY for you to know how many will actually be mailed. Also, if any are mailed, is usually by “Bulk Rate” which is the most ineffective way to send them out .

5. Avoid programs with complicated commission formulas. This seems to always result in an excuse for NOT paying any commissions to many or, in some cases, all of their distributors.

6. Avoid plans promoting products not useful to most people, or that cost more than the retail price paid in stores. Also beware of any plan that lets people become distributors without buying a product. This is not fair because most distributors, when given this option, will not buy the product. This results in lost sales all the way down the line.

Now that you know what to avoid, you are better equipped and ready to select a “genuine” M-L-M opportunity of your liking.
